Bougainvillea thrives in full sun. For maximum blooming, they need direct sunlight for at least 5 hours per day. Without this Bougainvillea will still grow but will lack it's distinctive color and flowers. These plants are tropical so they do best in Hardiness zones 9 and up, and can maintain blooms over winter in these conditions.
Bougainvillea are heavy feeders, and they require regular monthly fertilization. High iron fertilizers will help produce vibrant colors.
They are drought tolerant when established, but avoid letting the soil get too dry or allowing the plant to sit in water. Bring the soil to visual dryness and then water thoroughly. If few leaves but some color, not enough water. If lots of leaves but little color, too much water.
