Trachelospermum asiaticum, Asian jasmine, is a vine commonly used as a groundcover. It has dark-green, glossy foliage and resembles Confederate jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), but with much smaller leaves. In spring, Asian jasmine bears small, creamy white flowers with a pleasing fragrance. Unfortunately, it rarely flowers in cultivation. Asian jasmine is a very versatile plant for the landscape. It will grow in sun or shade and is drought tolerant once established. The plant has very few pest problems and is virtually maintenance free. It is usually a fast spreader and can cover an area quickly, though there are some forms that grow slowly. Asian jasmine can be aggressive with other plants, so do not plant it near smaller shrubs and perennials unless you plan to keep it trimmed from these plants.
